Your Anchor

Victory Beyond the Cup covers the intersection of sports and faith.

Every day you choose your perspective.

Now there's so much that we can't control, but God renews our minds and gives us his perspective.

When we spend time in his word, God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours.

So whatever you're going through right now, abide with Jesus and cultivate the habit daily spending time in God's word.

That was essential for me in my 20s.

When my soccer career ended, I was fighting for my life for a year.

It took 10 years to fully recover.

And God taught me through his word that who I am is not what I do.

I don't have a performance-based identity anymore.

It's not a roller coaster ride of pride and shame and inflate and deflated.

No, my perspective is that I am in God's family.

I'm accepted, loved, forgiven, and it's grace-based.

See, even in the most difficult times, God does his greatest work.

We still grieve, that doesn't make us less spiritual, but we receive God's comfort and hope, which is greater than our challenges.

God's perspective includes gratitude, being thankful for what we have.

None of us are guaranteed tomorrow.

It's a gift to have abilities, to be able to play in a sport, to be alive, to have teammates, to have opportunities.

We're thankful for all of this.

A couple of years ago, I tore my Achilles tendon and initially there was so much disappointment, a long road to recovery, but then that motivated me to run a marathon for kids who don't have clean water and they're in Africa and I've been there and I've seen that and even my son ran with me the last few miles.

You see, when there's a setback, God will often build a comeback and you might be in a situation now where there's disappointment, there's pain and you don't know how it's gonna play out, but trust God and walk with him.
