Navigating the Landscape of Ethical Leadership in Business

We focus on the headline failures, but most ethical breakdowns aren't mustache-twirling villains.

They're small, reasonable steps that pile up.

The social psychologist Jonathan Haidt talks about our moral gut reacting first and our reasoning catching up after, like a press secretary spinning what we already feel.

The elephant and the rider.

The rider is logic.

The elephant, intuition, actually moves.

Exactly.

If you only pitch spreadsheets to the rider, you lose.

The work is understanding, then steering.

The elephant.

So, how do you guide a whole herd when each person's elephant was raised on different experiences and, as Haidt argues, different moral foundations?

You build a shared lens.

Move the question from what's my gut to what are our principles.

I worked with a startup stuck on user data.

The engineers felt a purity pull, code and privacy as something you don't contaminate, don't do harm.

That was their elephant, loud and clear.

Meanwhile, sales felt loyalty, to the team, to targets, to keeping the lights on.

Using the data looked like serving customers and protecting jobs.

Two sincere groups, both sure they're doing the right thing, but grounded in different instincts.

Yep.

The leader's first impulse was, I'll decide, everyone align.

Talk to the writers.

It would have landed like betrayal for at least one side.

So what happened? They slowed down.

Brought both teams together and started with values, not the data call.
