Jess and Colleen share how they learned personal finance and investing through short, focused research sessions (including lunch-hour study), Canadian online resources, a couple of books (Beat the…
But first, Colleen, I wanted to talk a little bit about how we got this knowledge about finances and investing.
I think a lot of listeners are listening and they're like, oh, everyone knows this stuff and I'm the only one that doesn't know it.
And it's like a really common thing.
I want to talk about like how I got all this knowledge.
I wasn't taught it and there's nothing special about me or anything.
What happened is after the mutual fund thing that I've talked about before, I just really wanted to learn what was going on.
So what I did is I dedicated one week and I was like, for this whole week for my lunch hour, I'm going to spend my entire one hour lunch just researching all these financial topics and all these things that I've heard about, but I don't fully actually understand.
So I literally just took one week.
I gobbled my lunch down before and I sat at the computer at work and I just like spent my full hour.
I was like, I'm already here at work.
I don't really have anything else to do.
And I just dedicated that hour for one week and I learned so much and I didn't have any distractions because I was just like at work.
It's not like I was at home and could just like get up and like go make a snack or something.
And that was really, I'd say probably where I got like 80% of my knowledge about investing from.
It's just like I made the schedule and I was like, I'm doing this for one hour.
So it was like five hours in one week.
And I just, when I heard like a financial thing, I would write it down and then I would research it at
work.
I love that because it was also before AI, before you could just like use AI to like come up with all the information.
So you really had to check your sources.
And I know that you also read some books around that time too.
And I think, you know, doing it over your lunch hour just makes it so digestible where it's not so overwhelming.
It's just like little pieces of information.
Yeah, exactly.
It's not like I was sitting down for like five hours at a time and you get all fatigued.
