Ralph TillGuestWendy MontroyHostSo for our listeners who didn't catch our first two episodes about Egyptian tortoises, can you go over what their current situation is in their native range and why is wild recovery for them so challenging?

Well, we'll start out with several years ago, they were designated as protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The Endangered Species Act prohibits any collection, any sale, any transfer, anything.

Why, though? Why are they protected? Well, they're protected because in their native range, between a combination of habitat destruction, poaching, collection for the pet trade.

Their numbers have just been decimated to the point where they're virtually non-existent in their home range of Egypt, which is a shame.

So a byproduct of that was that the powers to be and i don't want to get into all that part of it petition to have them protected it was despite some objection it was approved and and now we are in a situation where they are again protected under the endangered species act it it in this country where we can't do anything about the home range.

I'd spent years cultivating a nice breeding group I spent years admittedly selling some to people whom I thought were responsible keepers and for the most part were.
