As always, thank you for hanging out and remembering Melissa Dohme Hill with me today. On January 24, 2012, 20-year-old Melissa Dohme agreed to meet her ex-boyfriend, Robert Lee Burton Jr., outside…
Our case today is going to begin in the very early morning hours of January 24th, 2012.
And by very early morning hours, I mean very early morning hours.
It was 3:15 AM when police in Clearwater, Florida, responded to a nine one one call of a woman being stabbed.
The woman who called into nine one one had been outside, thankfully, at this time of night and then come upon a horrifying scene of a man stabbing a woman over and over and had been close enough that she was even able to give them a description of the man saying that he was white and about two hundred and twenty-five pounds.
So big boy, big white boy.
So an officer was dispatched, and when she arrived, she said that she started to pull up to the home and she saw something off to the side moving in the grass.
And as she got closer, she realized that this was a woman begging for help, yelling for help.
So the officer ran over and found this woman bleeding from many, many wounds all over, I would say all over her body, but mostly to her head and her neck.
And this woman was begging for this cop to save her life.
And this woman was twenty-year-old Melissa Dome.
This officer has said that she had never seen anyone before or since that was in such bad condition as Melissa was when she came upon her that night.
Just by looking at her, she did not think that Melissa was going to survive this.
Many people did not think Melissa was going to survive what happened to her.
But at the time that this cop arrived, Melissa was still alive, and she was even able to talk a little bit.
So the cop started to ask her, like, "What happened? Who did this to you?" And she started trying to say a name, and she said a name that sounded like Robbie Martin.
So the cop repeated it back to her, like, "Robbie Martin did this to you?" And the girl, Melissa, was like, "No.
No," and eventually was able to say B, like Burton.
And she's like, "Robbie Burton did this to you?" And spelled it back to her, B-U-R-T-O-N.
And Melissa had this look in her face of just...
What is the word for it? It's relief, just this huge feeling of relief that she was actually understood.
Because though she was talking, it was like she was talking the best she could considering everything that had happened to her.
Melissa then went on to tell this cop that this guy, Robbie, her ex-boyfriend, had tried to kill her.
He had tried to do this by stabbing her over and over with two knives, one large knife and one small knife.
And the officer said in learning this, she just felt chills go through her body, and she felt so badly for Melissa.
So now this cop knew that a man named Robbie Burton had attacked Melissa and tried to murder her before running off, presumably armed.
