Show Notes Why You Keep Going Back (Even When You Desperately Want Sobriety) Why is it that we can desperately want sobriety… and still find ourselves reaching for the very thing we promised we’d…
Over the years, I have coached many people who genuinely wanted sobriety.
Intelligent people, committed people, people who read every recovery book, listened to every podcast, who journaled, meditated, attended meetings and knew and know exactly what they should do.
And yet they still relapsed.
So recently I noticed a familiar pattern again.
Someone had managed a couple of alcohol-free days.
She had worked incredibly hard.
However, she noticed even on the first day that she became intensely irritable.
And that everything annoyed her.
She felt restless.
Almost like she wanted to crawl out of her own skin.
And this didn't really improve the next two days either.
But she pushed through.
And then the binge came.
I've seen this pattern too many times over the years not to recognize it.
In fact, if I'm honest, I have lived it myself.
And maybe you have too.
You white knuckle your way through several days.
You brace, you hold yourself together.
You go to meetings, you listen to a podcast, you do the things.
And you just don't drink.
And then.
It's not that you just have a drink.
You have an overdrink.
You drink far more than you intended.
You have a binge.
