Uh, in college, you, in a course of study, will sometimes go from a 101 to a 201, right? The 101 is the introduction to whatever field of study you're going to be getting into.

The 201, you go a bit further in the teaching, a bit further in your understanding.

Matthew, at this point in his gospel, is shifting us as readers and shifting the story of Jesus from a 101 to a 201.

Uh, what he's doing at this point is showing how the disciples are going to now not only hear Jesus' words and watch Jesus' work, 101, they're now going to ingest his words and work, and then in his authority, do Jesus' work and say Jesus' words.

I've called this whole section that we're in in Matthew's gospel, Matthew 8, 9, and 10, The Kingdom Colliding with Darkness.

But today, Jesus is going to begin to send out his disciples, because it's not just Jesus, the leader of the kingdom, that collides with darkness.

It's his kingdom, his people, who as emissaries of Jesus, also as extensions of him, collide with darkness as well.

Like, what is our mission? What are we supposed to be doing here on Earth? Why the church? Questions like that inform this text.
