How much of your singing teacher’s teaching are you still passing on without realising?
The master-apprentice model can turn up in places we don’t think to look: teacher training, choirs, rehearsals and professional organisations. Even in how comfortable we feel asking another teacher for help.
We’re back for Season 13 of This Is A Voice, and Gillyanne has spent much of the past year deconstructing that model for a new book chapter. What have we inherited from our own teachers? What do we value enough to keep? And where might a hierarchy be influencing us without our noticing?
We talk about why independent singing teachers need a stronger voice in research, what teachers value about their own training, and why knowing your voice science is only part of being an expert teacher. We also introduce the thinking behind our new Teacher-Mentor Pathway, helping experienced teachers support other teachers.
Meanwhile, Jeremy has returned to solo piano recitals after 40+ years. It started on a cruise with the thought, “I could do that.” Three different programmes and five concert offers later, things have taken some unexpected turns.
There’s also a reunion with a pianist he hasn’t spoken to for 45 years, Carnival of the Animals, and the story of an entire set of recordings wiping itself 24 hours before a national tour. While he was moving house. Naturally.
A conversation about what we carry forward from our training, and what happens when we return to something we’ve missed.
