[gentle music] As we head into an El Niño year in India this year, many water utilities around the country are going to face severe drought and therefore water restrictions.

But what would it take to make a water utility more resilient? How do we manage risk better in a changing climate? We're going to delve into all of these topics with Dr.

Newsha Ajami, the founding director of the Governance for Risk, Resilience and Recovery program at Stanford.

She started off as a hydrologist, but through her career has seamlessly moved between academia on one hand and public policy on the other, serving on some of the major utility boards and public service commissions in California.

And we had an absolute blast in this conversation, looking at how California and Bangalore are similar and different in many ways, and how in both places, nineteenth-century institutions and infrastructure are confronting twenty-first century realities with changing climate and growth.

Today, we have a good friend and an amazing hydrologist, Newsha Ajami, with us.

Newsha is an Iranian-American hydrologist, civil engineer, and environmental policy expert, and her work seamlessly traverses academia on one hand, and then policy and practice on the other.

She's recognized for her work on sustainable urban water management, on water energy food nexus, and the application of data science to environmental governance and climate resilience.

Newsha is the founding director of the Governance for Risk, Resilience, and Recovery, the GR3 program, at the Doerr School of Sustainability.

It's a position that she's just recently started, and previously she's been the chief development officer for the Earth and Environmental Sciences area at LBNL, or the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.

Also holds many different positions serving on the boards of a number of utilities, and, uh, so even though she's sitting at a place like Stanford in a very, very prestigious academic setting, but she has real-world experience, helping utilities kind of actually make better decisions o- on a day-to-day basis.
