Send us Fan Mail The call said my big sister died of a drug overdose. The death certificate might agree, but I don’t. What I watched, what I lived…
In 2022, I got a call that my big sister, Jessica, died of a drug overdose, but she didn't, even though that's what the death certificate says.
My sister had a response to trauma that sounded like, "There must be something wrong with me.
I must not be good at all, and this pain is so unbearable that I will do anything not to feel it.
I will lie to everyone I love, because I can't live in a body that hates itself." In the six months leading up to that phone call, my sister had gone from trying to get sober, really trying, to disappearing, and I barely heard from her at all.
The texts became really infrequent, and whenever I reached out, there was just a real covering up.
Kids are great." I knew she relapsed, and I knew she didn't wanna talk about it, but I always let her know I was there.
And then she sent me a text message, and it had a lot of really scary photographs of her face.
She had a couple of really bad black eyes, a broken nose, a split lip, and a cracked tooth.
And you know what she said at the bottom? "Courtesy of slips, trips, and falls." And you know why she said that? Because she was so ashamed.
And of course, I called her right away in a total panic, asking, "What the fuck just happened?" Praying to God that she would just tell me the truth, and she's like, "I know.
I know it looks so crazy, Sam, but first, I was carrying really heavy groceries and didn't see the stairs, and I just fell right on my face.
And then the next day, I took a bath and I slipped and I split my lip and I cracked my tooth.
I said, "Is someone doing this to you?" 'Cause she talked a lot about a boyfriend who I had never met that I didn't know she had until this phone call.
