So maybe you can start, Laura, by just talking to us about why the split year sort of concept exists.

Because in a lot of countries, it doesn't, right? It's just like, it's a bright line.


So as a result, if you relocate during a UK tax year, or in order to sit in line with maybe somebody else's tax year, you could end up in a situation where you don't necessarily need, or you would be tax resident in two jurisdictions.

So in the UK, just to kind of flip slightly backwards in terms of the statutory residence test, the first thing that you do is you look at the full tax year.

If you're non-resident for the whole tax year, then that's kind of almost like full stop.



But it's always worth mentioning that the starting point is you've got to be a UK tax resident for the whole year before you look at that split year.

Yeah, and I think to your point, it's an issue of why does it exist? And I think one of the things that's interesting is that it's a natural consequence, I think, of the second automatic UK test.
