Tony GleesonHostWe're here in Parliament today supporting 10 incredible Australians to file a complaint with the United Nations Human Rights Committee.
The complaint argues that the Australian government is failing to protect them from climate harms and climate pollution by continuing to say yes to coal and gas corporations.
Around 80% of the coal and gas produced here is shipped overseas to be burnt.
But because it's for export, it's not counted in Australia's climate targets or its climate policies.
I'll say that again.
80% of Australia's climate pollution is simply not counted.
My name is Professor Ann Polina.
I'm a Ngunna, Warawa and Wollongoro traditional owner from the Kimberley.
In 2023, we had the largest flood ever in the history of Western Australia.
Our community went underwater.
The graves of our ancestors were covered in 1.5 metres of water.
We have lost everything in that flood.
It has taken three years for us to go back and start this flood recovery.
I live with a severe auto inflammatory condition that becomes much worse during extreme heat.
When I have a flare, it can feel like my skin is ripping and tearing.
What I want people to understand is that climate change doesn't affect everyone equally.
People living with disability, chronic illness and poor quality housing are often hit first and hardest.
But I also know how strong our communities are.
We look after one another.
I'm part of this case because I believe governments have a responsibility to do the same.
My name is Barry Trail.
I'm an environmental scientist and also a rural volunteer firefighter for over 10 years.
Like all of us, I've seen massive increases in climate weather disasters.
I've had friends and colleagues who have lost their houses to fire.
