This week the Steel Cod Retail Council flagged four brands by name — JennAir, Dacor, Thermador, and Viking — and the common thread isn't product. It's response time. Jon's read on all of it: this is what it looks like before it shows up in sell-through numbers. Manufacturers assume everything is fine until the data softens. The council is telling you it's softening right now.
JennAir keeps coming up around parts availability. They're back-ordered consistently, and dealers are ending up replacing the entire unit just to make the customer whole — because waiting on the actual part isn't an option anymore. Jon says the word "dread" is showing up in responses about selling Whirlpool-backed brands. That's a serious escalation in language.
Dacor is in a tough spot structurally. It's a luxury brand running on Samsung's support infrastructure, and Samsung's service reputation is one of the worst in the industry. Service calls are booked out months. Jon's own contacts at Dacor have largely been laid off. He said it plainly: if Dacor is on your floor, start conversations with backup brands. He's not sure Samsung even wants the brand to recover.
Thermador and BSH are usually running the same rep for both lines, stretched thin across both. Response times are at 3-5 days for same-day issues, and ship times have climbed to 4-8 weeks — which Jon says is unusual for them. He thinks it's temporary and expects BSH to come on the show to address it, but in the meantime the frustration is real.
Viking went through a private equity acquisition — 26 North took a 51% controlling stake from Middleby — and the whole team has been reshuffled. The example that stuck out most: a six-month wait on a replacement toe kick. That delay caused a contractor to withhold final payment on a job because the range wasn't considered complete. That's a retailer-contractor relationship on the line over a decorative piece.
Jon's prescription for all four: call same day. Not with the solution. Just: I see it, I'm on it, here's when I'll be back to you. That's the bare minimum. And right now, most of them aren't clearing it.
