As artists, it’s easy to let recognition, rejection, awards, and sales tell us whether our work is “good.” In this episode, I share a very recent experience with a juried art show—one that stirred up…
Um, first, a couple weeks ago, I entered into a, uh, juried show at the, um, Art League of Lewisville and, um, Visual Art League of Lewisville.
And it was a show called Fresh Ideas, and what they're asking for is ideas that are innovative and new.
Well, as any artist, they let you submit three, and I wanna tell you that the Visual Art League of Lewisville is an incredible place.
I thought, "I, I'm gonna hedge my bets." One of them was really, uh, a beautiful painting, just aesthetically beautiful, something that most people would love to have in their house because it was beautiful.
Isn't that horrible? I picked one that all of my artist friends and my students loved, and so I thought, "Okay, I'll put it in the show, see what happens." The third painting was probably for me.
It was one of my wacky paintings, something that comes out of me when I paint intuitively, when I listen to spirit flowing through me.
It's kind of my brand, right? So let me tell you a story about my insecurity with my brand and, and how it, how it works.
So they announced the selections for the show, and believe it or not, they selected my wild and crazy painting.
And I thought, "Wow, maybe, maybe it's time." [laughs] And even though I tell us, and I tell you, and I really do think when you paint, you paint in the moment, there's that humanness of us that, "Oh, what if I paint a great painting? What if I finally get noticed? What if I'm appreciated for my art?" And you know, I have to tell you, I have several different styles, and this one is with heavy black lines and bold aw-awkward shapes.
