While I should have immediately checked my surroundings, I was mostly lost in a moment of my own thoughts, replaying all of the checks I had just completed.

How did I get this wrong? That man had no pulse, no heartbeat, he was dead, I was sure of it.

My heart was pounding from a mix of things, but really, all I can remember was just the utter disbelief.

Where did he even go? I stepped into the room, carefully, and was scanning towards the corners looking for him, but then wondered if maybe he had rolled off the bed to the other side.

So I thought that a thought had kicked my ass into gear that instead of tiptoeing in, I actually had to rush to the other side of the bed to see if he was there.

But being on this side gave me a view into the bathroom of the room, which to this day might be one of the scariest things I have ever seen in a hospital.

I was frozen, absolutely petrified and again just in disbelief at what I was looking at.

but his reflection in the mirror was what sent this over the edge as the scariest story of my residency.

When my eyes settled into the dark of the bathroom, I could make out his face in the mirror.

His neck was tilted back a bit, and his mouth was completely hung open in this unnaturally wide, yanking position on his jaw.

His eyes were bulging and locked right on me in the background of the reflection.

I'd yet to see or hear of anything like this, so I ran from behind the bedside to the hall and shouted right down the corridor, "'I need help in 306! I need someone in here now!' At almost the same moment, I heard a crash from behind me.

By the time his nurse came running into the room, my adrenaline was through the roof.
