Today, I wanna talk about why internal family systems therapy works for healing emotional eating.

The actual clinical and human reality of why this model reaches what other approaches miss, why I believe it is one of the most effective frameworks available for healing a disordered relationship with food.

When people hear internal family systems, they think it's family therapy, like therapy for families, couples, parents, siblings all sitting in a room together.

IFS is individual therapy, but what we're working with is your internal family, the family within you, the different parts of yourself that have developed over time, each with their own perspective, their own role, and their own way of trying to keep you safe.

The internal family tends to mirror the external one, the dynamics that you grew up in, the roles that people played, the way emotions were handled or not handled, the unspoken rules about what was acceptable and what wasn't.

They live in your memories, so the critical voice inside you often sounds like someone from your past.

The part of you that over-functions and takes care of everything probably learned that role very early.

The part of you that shuts down when things get too intense, they learned that too.

Your parts took on the dynamics of your family, and understanding that changes everything about how we approach healing.
