The Resilient Dance Teacher Podcast

The words we choose as dance educators matter. In this episode, we're exploring how to give feedback that is specific, encouraging, and helps students grow with confidence. We'll discuss why dance's…
So my first tip for you is dance is subjective, so be aware of unconscious bias.
Something that you intend to say may be received differently by a student depending on where they are at mentally or beliefs that they may previously hold about themselves or about you or someone else in the room, right? So ask yourself before giving feedback, am I making an assumption here or is this feedback really going to be helpful and beneficial to this student? Number two is to give positive, future-centric feedback that demonstrates your belief in the student's ability to apply it.
So this ties into the curiosity thing I've been talking about recently in previous episodes about remaining curious and excited for your students to apply what it is that you have to share and giving that feedback in a way that shows them that you believe that they will be able to do it.
So, for example...
Hannah, when you really push through your standing leg in the pirouette, I know you're going to feel so much more confident during your turn.
Or when you fully stretch through your metatarsals at the top of the jump, I know it's going to extend your line even more.
