We're gonna get right into it.
The FIFA World Cup has officially come to a close, and one thing that I really noticed from this whole month of soccer is how jealous is Roger Goodell that the FIFA World Cup has a third place match?
He's definitely extremely jealous, but a third place game in the NFL would absolutely never work, and here's why.
Every star player would say they're hurt.
The fan base is, when you have a third place and you don't go to the Super Bowl for a good organization, people are getting fired, traded, or cut.
That's what the fan base wants.
So playing for a third place game would never work unless they financially incentivized it and/or gave you good draft picks, or, like, you get more cap space, or you have to have some type of preferred to play that extra game for essentially nothing.
The reason why the World Cup or the Olympics work is 'cause you're playing for that bronze medal, which matters to most countries, and a country can be like, "Ah, at least we got a medal," when most countries don't.
Everything is about incentives.
And yes, this would be very hard to implement into the NFL, but if you gave a team, like, a top 10 draft pick or if you gave a team more leeway for their salary cap, this would force these teams to actually care.
Now, is it maybe a little far-fetched? Sure.
But everything is about entertainment, everything is about growing the game, and one thing Roger Goodell wants is to grow the game.
He's trying to be like soccer.
All I know is Roger is kicking himself right now, being like, "How in the next negotiation can I say one less preseason game, but you have to play a third place match?"
What I think is more likely to happen in the NFL is that they're gonna add an extra team to the playoffs.
They currently have seven.
First place gets a bye.
What's about to happen is there's gonna be an eighth seed, and there's gonna be no byes.
That's more likely to happen than a third place match because then you still get that extra game.
You actually get an extra two games, which Roger Goodell would be drooling at the mouth for two extra playoff games because adding an extra game to the regular season, like, by week 17, 18, people are like, "Ah, we know the place." Like, there's only a couple teams that are actually playing for a playoff spot or trying to get healthy, whatever.
But you add an extra playoff game, everything is on the table, and everything matters, and the best players are playing, and, like, people are playing hurt.
