We're back! Time to catch up with Rue as our duo (or trio, counting Dirt) make their way to Anole. \[marked explicit for language] Written by Olivia Bradberry & Lexi Donahue Edited & produced by…
Chapter 12.
Afternoon, May 5th.
Oh god, what now? Rue thought to herself.
She had dreaded crying in front of Orion, but this was not the sort of reprieve she had hoped for.
Once again, she had to push her feelings aside to deal with yet another crisis.
The man standing about a meter away from Orion with his hand on his machete.
She wanted to throw her hands up in aggravated resignation, but her nervous system overruled her.
She and Orion were both frozen in place.
There was a beat of silence, and then, without looking up at her, Orion slowly and cautiously lifted her hands and turned around.
I don't want to fight you.
Rue was more than a little surprised to hear those words coming out of Orion's mouth.
She had only known the woman for a little over 24 hours, but it seemed as though fighting was something she generally enjoyed.
Their attacker seemed surprised as well.
He scoffed.
"'Are you sure?' "'I've heard you enjoy a good scuffle,' he said, unhooking the machete from his belt.
"'Seriously, I don't want any trouble.' Orion's voice was deeper than Rue had ever heard it before.
If she was trying to throw him off, it wasn't working." He took another step towards her, reaching out to grab her arm.
Orion dodged.
Rue watched, paralyzed atop Dirt's saddle.
The tears that had welled up in her eyes were already dried.
Knock it off, Orion tried again, abandoning her deep voice as her exasperation increased.
The man lunged towards her again, but this time she was ready.
She elbowed him, hard, knocking the machete out of his hand.
He grunted and grabbed her with his opposite arm, trying to push her to the ground.
She responded by kneeing him in the gut.
