Matt and Nathaniel return to discuss Cale Makar’s MASSIVE 20.4m extension in Colorado, the impact around the league and the team moving forward! Plus a Horror show for Hellebuyck, trades in…
Yeah, and there's only one place to start, really.
Megabucks Makar.
He signs his new contract extension in Colorado.
That'll be kicking into effect next season.
So he's got one year left of his current deal.
But he has signed Nathaniel the max term, the max money, eight years, $20.4 million.
First reactions to when you saw that? immediately
like no quinn hughes is gonna want 20.5 by 10 no um and then i sort of calmed down a bit and i thought you know what he's the best defenseman you can get a fancy forward forwards come and go but to get an absolute stud defenseman You've got to do no silly business, get the deal done, max by max.
What more can you say, really?
Yeah, yeah.
He will be a Colorado avalanche for the rest of his career.
And for me, he's worth every dollar of that $20.4 million.
He's the best defenseman in the league, multiple-time Norris winner, Stanley Cup champion.
He will probably be the best defenseman in the league throughout... six years of that eight-year deal.
And I just think, you know, I've got absolutely no problems.
I mean, there's obviously the Twitter discourse of, oh, well, I'd rather have Darnell Nurse for, like, 9.8 than Cale McCarr for 20.5. Bollocks.
No, you wouldn't.
You'd give your left... kidney uh for uh you know for kale mccarran on on your team anyone would yeah no maybe maybe not quite that um but i mean In terms of what this means for Colorado moving forward, Nathaniel, they've got all their key pieces locked up for a long time.
They've got Makar now kind of tied in long term.
They've got Natchez, McKinnon.
Their big players are all going to be there for a long time.
It kind of does maybe raise a question moving forward, and obviously time will tell, and this is definitely next off-season's issue for them, as to how they're then going to make the rest of the roster work.
They're maybe going to have to start bringing in some guys on entry-level contracts or lower deals to kind of round out the bottom line or the third pair on defence.
Yeah, but I think certainly... it's not going to stop Colorado being competitive, is it?
No.
Yeah, and there's only one place to start, really.
