[laughs] Well, uh, this week I want to talk about, uh, a beautiful building that we have in the middle of town.

They started to work on it to build it in 1812, and on the 1st of April, 1815, it opened-
That was the, the year of Waterloo.

Yeah, I agree because it's certainly not in any [laughs] kind of traditional style of building.
Yeah.

And a couple of years after it opened, Hardiman was writing his history and he said that, "This fine building, which is superior to most provincial seats of justice in Ireland, stands at Newtownsmith on the site of the ancient and venerable avy- abbey of the Franciscans." Um, and it was magnificent.

He said, "It had two spacious and well-appointed courts for transacting the civil and criminal business, with grand and petty jury rooms adjoining.

And then there were all kinds of offices and apartments for the high sheriff, the treasurer, the clerk of the peace, other all kinds of law officers."
Yeah.

And the, the, the big feature of it for most people passing was the very lofty portico, uh, which was...

"It is altogether an edifice highly creditable to the county and considerably ornamental to the town." And this is what Hardiman wrote just five years after the building had opened.
