Overwhelm should not simply be accepted as the price of nonprofit leadership. In the latest episode of The Nonprofit Edge, I sit down with leadership coach and Synergy Sync founder Suken Jain for a…
Suken JainGuestChris LooneyHostSo I wanted to kind of challenge leaders out there a little bit with your help.
And a lot of this conversation is not to judge leaders, but to recognize that sometimes things happen to us and sometimes we create our own problems.
And so I kind of wanted to know from your perspective, and again, this is your opinion, you know, how much of this is circumstantial
how much of this is sort of created by ourselves as leaders, maybe unintentionally.

And thanks for the tee up because, you know, I think people can see this from so many different perspectives.

And I'll start with the fact that situationally, and especially as we sit here today and the challenges that exist, and especially in the mission-driven area, like you're talking about, of a lot of funding has dried up, right? This is a tough time we're in and tough situations we're in.

So I want to acknowledge that to start with, because we are in tough situations.

Now comes the individual part of it, right? How do we handle it? How do we deal with that? Especially when we feel so passionately about the cause.

And that's where I think we can find and implement different tools on how to deal with those situations.

What are the tools we're using for ourselves? And I think that starts with building awareness And then once you have the awareness, okay, what are the things I need to do to counteract some of these aspects I'm feeling? And that's where we can step in and that's where we can take charge.
Yeah, I made a list of some of the things that... could be causes circumstantial or self-created of this challenge.
And there's the saying yes too often, there's an inability to delegate for whatever reason, maybe some perfectionism, micromanaging or wanting to be involved in every decision, confusing urgency with importance, not having proper boundaries, always being available, taking responsibility for things that maybe should be others.
Are those what you see in your practice? Are there other things that are missing?

I'll go back to the research here because I think that's, as I've gone back and thought back to when I went through burnout, these really explain a lot of these different pieces.
