EP419 How to Create Motion Duck Decoys for Cheap

Now, the simplest strategy for a motion setup is to get a decoy on the water, tie a string to the decoy, run that string into your blind, and then just tug on that string from time to time.

The downside of this simple yet effective strategy is you can easily start dragging the duck towards you, just pulling it free from its rigging.

Or if it's on a line with a weight on the bottom, you can just little by little cause that thing to just pull the weight off the bottom and bring the whole setup closer to you.

But also, you know, that string can be pretty visible just going, you know, across the top of the water into your hand and then you pull it and it slaps across the top of the water as it goes out to the decoy.

So while that can work and does work, and I'm not saying don't do it, I think there are other ways that can help alleviate some of those problems and create a little bit more realistic effect.

So number one is the dunking duck decoy approach.

So the idea here is you have a duck, a decoy on the top of the water.

You want that decoy to appear like it's dunking itself in the water.

It's putting its head in the water.

It's looking for food or something.

And it's just bobbing in the water.

So one of the ways to achieve that, one of the cheap ways to achieve that is get yourself a little keychain ring.

Just,

you know,

anything that's a little metal ring will work.

You probably have keychain rings that you've got lying around.

Take that and then get yourself a weight.

This could be an old two-pound dumbbell.

This could be a brick.

It could be a rock.

It could literally be anything that's got a couple of pounds to it.

And then you're going to want to somehow attach that keychain ring to the top of that weight.

Now, what I would probably do and have done is I'll take an old dumbbell.

Ideally something that's black or brown or you spray paint it black or brown.

And then I will just zip tie the keychain ring to the top of the dumbbell.
