EP411 Bird Hunting 101 – Pheasant, Grouse, Doves & More

Now, first and foremost, what are some of the reasons why you might want to go bird hunting? What are some of the fun things about it? Things that I particularly enjoy, in just a few words, because you need some motivation to push you over the hump and go from thinking about it and wanting to do it to actually getting out there and doing it.

And so one of the things I really like about bird hunting is that it is different than a lot of your sit and wait hunting.

This is not sitting in a deer stand or a deer blind or up against a tree for four, six, ten hours, something like that.

This is an active kind of hunting.

Oftentimes, it does not have to be.

There can be low-impact sitting strategies, but by and large, at least the way I'm going to teach you how to hunt on this episode and through most of my other episodes on the subject, is an active, moving, participating hunt.

so it's not just going to the woods and sit there for a day we're going up and moving and trying to get after birds and i think that is a great change of pace i like deer hunting sitting doing nothing just relaxing taking it easy keeping my senses sharp waiting for the right moment i think that's fun I also like walking through a field with a shotgun, trying to flush some birds out of the brush, discovering new places, being on the move.

I think that is a tremendous amount of fun.

So whether you're a fan of sitting, hunting or not, I think bird hunting is either a different change of pace that you might really appreciate, or it's a different kind of hunting that maybe you would enjoy because you're not a big fan of just sitting there for long periods of time.

Other things about bird hunting that can be a lot of fun is that it can be a great team sport.

You go out, two, three people, more than that even, but you can go out, you can talk, you can interact, you can plan and strategize and do things, and it can absolutely be a fun team sport, something that actually you can be more effective with more people, as opposed to deer hunting and maybe to some extent turkey hunting and It can be more challenging with more people because that's more movement, more noise, more scent, more things that can go wrong that can spook the game.

When it comes to bird hunting, you're often trying to spook the game.

And so having more people can absolutely help make that an easier thing to do.

So, a lot of good things.

Also, I think bird hunting can, doesn't have to be, but it can be cheaper than some of your sitting and hunting.

You need a little bit of gear? I'm going to talk about that.

But there's a lot less I think you need to hunt pheasants and doves and grouse and numerous other things than you might have to get for deer hunting.

I'll talk about that.

Of course, you can spend tons of money on any kind of hunting.

There are companies out there that will give you those options.

If you need a shotgun to hunt birds, there are cheap shotguns you can buy, and there are shotguns that cost as much as vehicles that you can buy.

Sky's the limit on what you could spend.

I'm just talking about generally speaking, I think you can get into bird hunting a little cheaper.

But of course, there are opportunities to spend lots of money, though the same exists for deer hunting.

I mean, just start talking about buying properties, right? I mean, there's sky's the limit on how much you could spend on anything.
