A few years back, I was setting up a classroom at the fire hall to teach a first aid course.
And while I was getting everything kind of sorted and set up, we just started chatting.
And at one point she looked at me and said, OK, every firefighter has a side gig.
She asked if I had a specialty and explained that we're not actually allowed to call anything we do a specialty, but that I'd done a fair bit of work in sport and that I probably knew more about pain than the average therapist out there.
I just said, wow, that has to be rough because I mean, what else do you say to that? So then she asked if she could book an appointment with me.
I said, of course, and I gave her the website and I thought nothing more of it.
Things that had happened to her as a kid, things that followed her all the way through into adulthood.
And I remember looking at her at one point and saying, how are you still standing? That conversation went on for 40 minutes, and we had booked a 60-minute treatment.
So then I just looked at her and said, look, we've only got about 20 minutes left.
So I left the room, she got on the table, and then I did about 15 to 20 minutes of hands-on work.
And she just looked at me and said, for the first time in 30 years, I'm not really experiencing any pain right now.
