I used to have the experience, and again, I'm walking you through this because I imagine you have this too all the time actually, where as a clinician doing very, I'm psychoanalytic, I no longer see patients, but when I did, I was really wrestling with the work, long-term, working with the unconscious process, just wildly transformational, wildly non-prescriptive, and wildly tailored to the individual.
And the amount of work I had to do emotionally, psychologically, the amount of uncomfort, discomfort, then and now continue to put myself into for the sake of growth and truth and integrity being in integrity um i the work i was doing with clients was just profound and often um unwieldy right like it wasn't like you come in have a 30-minute session and your life changes And so when I ran into service providers, usually not therapists, usually not licensed mental health clinicians, other kinds of professionals who made these bold claims of overnight success, overnight change with their clients, it was seductive.
Wait, if these people can get overnight change in 30 seconds or less or one week, whatever it was, what am I doing here? I have an entire theory, understanding of this now, theoretically, that we can talk about another day.
But I will say the feelings of like confusion and insecurity for me and the seductiveness of like, what magical technique do I need to learn to get my clients to have success in 10 sessions or less.
What am I missing? One part of me was very clear that that seduction couldn't be real at its face.
And another part of me wanted to believe that there was something that could fix lifelong trauma, unconscious process in 10 sessions or less.
So I don't know how I ended up at this NLP neuro-linguistic programming event.
went to this event my experience it was like they were doing these psychological techniques that were like very interesting and had real like i had real bodily uh sensations in response and like my defenses were quickly um i i don't quite know how to say this someone might say lowered or surpassed i would now say violated to get to the next level we're gonna rip those defenses away violently disrespectfully, and make you feel a thing.
So I had this, and this comes like, we work with trauma, right? So we can think about that in this way.
I had the experience they wanted me to have, and I would leave feeling bad somehow.
And why do I feel in my gut feeling something happened something was just done to me right so this was the mix i had some time ago so then i was like i want to learn more right who cares about defenses who cares about how i feel let me learn more so i went to like the next phase of this nlp process to learn like what would it look like to become trained in this and fortunately i um like i said i always push towards growth i always push towards integrity and even if it's hard and even though i've had a lifetime i had a lifetime of um ignoring my gut and my instincts and putting them aside Um... to appease others.
I always have had some part of me that can like slowly say no, even when my no is hard to find.
