She's a philosopher, author, and speaker whose work bridges the academic and the everyday.

She holds degrees from Cedarville College, Western Kentucky University, and a PhD from Temple University.

Deeply influenced by Michael Polanyi, Esther has spent her career making profound ideas accessible and focusing on how we know what we know.

Her earlier books, such as Longing to Know, Loving to Know, and A Little Manual for Knowing, introduced covenant epistemology, an approach that places love, relationship, and commitment at the heart of knowing reality.

Today, we're especially excited to dive into her latest book, The Mother's Smile, which is subtitled Philosophical Formation in the Welcome of Mothers and Friends.

In it, oh, then we have a picture of it, okay? In it, Esther invites us to rediscover where philosophy truly begins, not in abstract arguments or ivory tower debates, but in the intimate face-to-face welcome of a mother's delighted smile.

Those of you who have followed John Verbeke know that he talks about the mother's smile as bringing the child into existence, basically.

That book and Esther's approach have captivated Ryan Lewis, who's also joining us today.

Ryan is a writer, a computer engineer, and a psychology counselor whose reflections on reality, perception, and human experience often draw from and extend ideas like those in Esther's work.

When I first met Ryan, he was working as a software engineer, and he has since earned a master's in counseling and now is pursuing that work alongside his deeper philosophical ideas in his excellent Substack presence, to which I point you all.
