Send us Fan Mail Did you know that the MO Medicaid reviews can trigger a required VIP? Can the facility submit new evidence for consideration?
Did you know that Missouri Medicaid has a validation improvement plan? I was recently seeking clarification from Myers and Stauffer on the CMI appeals process.
I learned about a new program effective July 1st, 2026 this year, when a Facilities Missouri Medicaid validation review identifies 40% or more unsupported MDS coding, the facility is now required to complete and implement a validation improvement plan.
This requirement applies following the validation review and is intended to address deficiencies identified during the audit process.
The required components of the validation improvement plan are outlined in the MDS review summary letter.
The facility must develop, implement, and upload the completed VIP to the Missouri Medicaid web portal, mocosreports.mslc.com. within 30 days of the date of the MDS review summary letter posted to the portal.
This is more than just a submission deadline.
The VIP must not only be written, but also implemented, and I want to stress that.
By the time the plan is uploaded, you should have already begun carrying out the corrective actions that you've outlined in your VIP.
Failure to develop, implement, and submit the VIP within the required timeframe may result in notification to the Missouri Department of Health for further action.
In addition to the new VIP program requirement, facilities need to remember that the MDS review exit conference form continues to provide an opportunity to request a reconsideration of the review findings.
If the facility, if you disagree with how your review turned out, you can submit a written request, must be signed by the appropriate person, clearly identifying the findings that are in dispute, upload it through the Missouri Myers and Stauffer web portal, be submitted no later than 15 business days after the completion of the exit conference.
Now remember, a reconsideration is not an opportunity to submit new documentation.
Only the documentation that was originally available can be reviewed.
Facilities should be aware that rate sanctions continue while the reconsideration process is pending.
And don't think you can ask for a reconsideration process after the final listings are posted or your new per diem rate is calculated, because they won't be considered.
You must follow the 15-day rule.
During my discussion with Meyers and Stauffer, I also learned that facilities have the option to request a higher level review after your reconsideration process if you're still not satisfied.
If that is something you're interested in, I'm sure you can reach out to Meyers and Stauffer for more information.
