Sheepdog Skill: Adaptability

No plan survives contact with the enemy.

It's not pessimism, it's operational realism.

The sheepdog who operates as if the plan will survive contact with the enemy is the one who's gonna freeze when it doesn't.

But the sheepdog who expects the plan to change, to evolve, to need to adapt, who's built the neural architecture for rapid values-anchored adaptation, is gonna keep moving forward.

So let's talk about what adaptability really is.

I want to define it a little closer because it's frequently confused with things that it's not.

First, adaptability is not indecision.

The person who can't commit to a course of action because they're always leaving their options open, that's not adaptability.

That's more like avoidance.

True adaptability requires committing fully to the current plan, but pivoting decisively if that plan breaks.

It requires both commitment and flexibility, not one or the other.

Next, adaptability is not abandoning your values under pressure.

That's called capitulation.

Adaptability will hold your mission constant while changing your methodologies.

The objective stays the same, but your approach evolves.

Here's a working definition.

Adaptability is the capacity to change your tactics, your posture, and/or approach without abandoning your mission or your core values.

In other words, it's flexible execution in service of your fixed purpose.

Now, you've probably heard of the OODA loop developed by Air Force Colonel John Boyd.

The OODA loop, observe, orient, decide, and act.

That's your operational framework for adaptability.

When things get challenging and the plan fails, you don't abandon the loop.

You adapt.

You learn to run it faster.

Observing the new reality, you observe more and faster.
