Now, first of all, it is never too early to be on the lookout for early signs of dyslexia.
Now, there's a misunderstanding that is perpetuated that someone can't be dyslexic before a certain age.
So part of that, I think, stems from the fact that if dyslexia is an unexpected inability to read, then a child has to be old enough to have been taught to read, right? Well, that's only part of the truth.
Let me start by saying there are early warning signs that suggest a child is at risk for dyslexia.
And these early signs of dyslexia occur long before the fourth grade, which is the age that most schools tell you, oh, that's when we'll test.
Knowing that a child is at risk allows you to spend more time addressing the areas of weakness, not ignoring them and hoping that they go away.
Now, maybe part of the reason I am so passionate about sharing these warning signs is because...
Now, the one thing you do need to recognize is that dyslexia has a genetic component.
So if anyone in your family is dyslexic or struggled to read, I want you to take note of that.
