Send us Fan Mail # **The Business of Play Because hustle isn’t fulfillment.** **Welcome home, inspired entrepreneurs.** What if the thing missing from your leadership isn’t more discipline, more…
I don't know that most entrepreneurs have ever really stopped to ask themselves what pressure actually does to a human being over time, not just to performance, to the person.
What happens when your nervous system spends years in urgency, years solving and producing, holding everything together, thinking about the next thing before the current thing is even complete? Now, at first, it can feel productive.
You stop playing with ideas because everything starts feeling so consequential.
So what fascinated me is this idea that biologically, the brain changes depending on the state we're operating in.
So when we're constantly stressed, the brain moves more into protection, which makes sense, right? Human beings were designed to survive threat.
But the problem is the brain doesn't always know the difference between a tiger chasing you and unread emails and the financial pressure and notifications all day long.
And so many founders are unknowingly trying to innovate while their entire body is operating like it's under attack.
Why so many entrepreneurs feel disconnected or emotionally flat is and why we can't think clearly had me wondering, what if some entrepreneurs don't actually have a creativity problem? What if they have a nervous system problem? What if the issue is the absence of spaciousness? Think about where your best ideas usually arrive.
It's moments where something in you lets you go enough for a new thought to emerge.
What I've seen for myself and the entrepreneurs that I've worked with is now more than ever how important this conversation is because we are living in a culture that rewards constant output.
How many times have you gobbled something at your desk just before you have to get on another meeting? Or what about while you're in that meeting? What about slipping in 20 more minutes of answering emails while you're in bed or answering phone calls while you're at your kid's game? Somewhere inside of all of that, many people slowly disconnect from aliveness itself.
I know what it feels like to become so focused on building something meaningful that slowly, almost without realizing it, life starts to become all responsibility and no play.
