What if one of the most powerful forces shaping human behaviour is something we rarely talk about - our fear of death? Sheldon Solomon is a social psychologist and one of the world’s leading…
We don't need to get into a debate about that, but we do know, for example, that the average American has never seen a dead person, that we spend more money on makeup and plastic surgery and chemicals to keep us looking young than we spend on education and social services and so on.
And in so doing, ironically, Avoid what you propose, which is a sustained contemplation of the reality of our finitude.
Today on The Initiation, I'm speaking with Sheldon Solomon.
Sheldon is one of the world's leading researchers on terror management theory, the idea that our awareness of death quietly shapes an enormous amount of human behavior.
In this conversation, we explore how unconscious death anxiety can drive tribalism, political extremism, our obsession with money and status, and even our destruction of the natural world.
But we also explore the other side.
What happens when, instead of denying death, we actually turn towards it? We talk about meditation, near-death experiences, awe, psychedelics, and the possibility that confronting our mortality can make us less afraid, more compassionate, and more fully alive.
And ultimately, we ask whether the crises humanity is moving through might themselves be part of a collective initiation, forcing us towards what Sheldon calls a new kind of existential maturity.
