Zach FerenbaughHostJakePanelistTedPanelistNickHostWe got a lot of good feedback from you guys on that one, so we're gonna talk more about woodsmanship today, specifically about how we've screwed it up in a bunch of different ways.
We've got a pile of these that we can show you from our videos, and if y'all have been watching our videos for any amount of time, you've seen us screw this up a bunch.
The one that comes mind immediately is that one that you and Zip had where the buck comes in and he just-
Yeah
That was a setup where we were in a tree, and honestly it was kind of a similar habitat type to this right here, where it's just a bunch of swamp, flat ground, and we were setting up on these trails that were coming through.
And the tree that we ended up getting in wasn't too bad, but where dad's shot opportunities were gonna be at on this trail, we didn't specifically go out there and look back up at the tree, 'cause we didn't wanna go leave ground scent out there.
But when that buck comes in, he doesn't notice us at all, 'cause there's plenty of good back cover, until he gets to that point, and then at that point there's skyline behind us, and we're silhouetted, hanging off the tree in our saddles, and that's when he turns and picks us off in the tree.
He was 15 yards, right in-
... right in the kill hole.
Just-
Right in the slot.
Just didn't quite enou- have enough time and enough cover to get the shot off, so that's one thing to consider.
You know, as you're looking at these trees right here, if the deer's walking through from the left to the right, he might not be able to pick you off in the tree until he gets to this certain point over here.
So it's not always something that's easy to visualize as you're trying to set up, 'cause you don't always wanna go out to the trail, like I was saying, and leave a bunch of ground scent and look back up there.
But from standing at the base of the tree, if you can kind of think about where that deer's gonna be walking through at and try and take a look, then you might be able to plan out your shot a little bit better and say, "All right, yeah, I need to kill him before he gets to this certain point."
Well, what you just brought up there with the ground scent is a, that's a good thing to think about, 'cause in your all situation, hunting marsh ground like this with really tall grass, you leave so much more ground scent in that type of a situation-
