O'Connor has reportedly been known to spend some of his spare time tucked away in a little corner of Wellington's Newlands Arms pub, putting pen to paper and composing stanzas on whatever subject takes his fancy.
But in his last few poetry writing sessions, the subject would have been a farewell to Parliament.
Indeed, he delivered his valedictory speech entirely in rhyming verse.
