That particular version was recorded live in the Village Vanguard on June the twenty-fifth, nineteen sixty-one.

Previously, he'd recorded it as, only as a solo piece, so this is the first time it had actually been heard in trio format.

The trio was, of course, Evans himself on the piano with Paul Motion on the drums and Scott LaFaro on bass.

And 10 days after that recording, Scott LaFaro was killed in a car accident, an event which hit Bill Evans very hard indeed.

It caused him to withdraw from music, uh, become a recluse for quite a long time.

He didn't reemerge until about a year later when he teamed up with, uh, Chuck Israels as his bass player.

We'll stick, uh, for now, though, with the earlier unit, the one we've just heard, as many people really feel it was never bettered, and, uh, it showcased Evans' talent to its greatest as he was completely locked in with the other musicians.
