We Thought Making Our First Feature Would Be Easier… with Devin Smock and Sam David

The, it's interesting you say that, 'cause I think there's two schools of thought on that, and I've done both myself.

One is you write it, and you worry about it later.

Mm-hmm.

And sometimes that can mean amazing things happen.

You know, you end up getting locations you never thought you'd dream of getting for a micro budget, and it makes it suddenly look really expensive.

Mm-hmm.

And the other thing, and I guarantee you you'll, this will happen on your next film, is you will be writing, and like you say, it is frustrating so you're like, "Oh, we can't, we can't do that.

We haven't got money for that.

We haven't got money for this." But the moment you find a solution that's gonna be, not easy to shoot, but cheaper to shoot, but also serves the story, it's like a hallelujah moment, 'cause you're getting-

Yeah

...

the, the pie and you're eating it.

Um, and that is difficult.

So yeah, I, I share that pain with you.

I'm writing at the moment, and I'm writing, and I'm kind of...

And you find your mind going off into these wonderful places, but you just think-

Mm-hmm

... "How the hell am I gonna do it?" So, so you're post-apocalyptic, and I've seen the trailer for it.

It looks really good, really slick.

Thank you.

So is it all like exterior? Is it all outside? 'Cause it looks like it's mostly in the woods, is it?

It, it's very exterior heavy.

I would say, you know, there really isn't a lot of wood stuff in there.

There, there's some, but it's really like, um, we live in a certain part of Illinois where, uh, superficially it can seem really boring visually, and it is, don't get me wrong.

But, um, you can just drive in certain locations and find certain roads, and it just like, i- certain areas, and it just doesn't look like Illinois.
