You took the food pyramid that I grew up with, that big pyramid, and you flipped it upside down.
when I got into, when I got this job a little about 16 months ago, a week after I came into office, I was handed the dietary guidelines that were developed during the Biden administration, and they were 453 pages long.
They were incomprehensible and they were written by food industry lobbyists.
So they reflected the commercial aspirations of those companies rather than a public health or science motivation.
And so we brought the best nutritionists in the country from the best universities in the country.
And they told Americans to eat protein, to eat vegetables, to eat high-quality grains.
And that's the way that we're going to end the chronic disease epidemic if people start eating good food.
It sounds so simple and like it's such a little thing, but it's massive and it's huge.
because it has the potential to really change the dietary culture in this country because through a number of mechanisms, but one of those mechanisms is that we, the federal government, particularly USDA, spends $405 million a day on food subsidies, so paying for food for Americans.
through the food stamp program, which is SNAP, through WIC's program, through school lunches, through the Indian Health Services.

And that subsidized food will now have to align with the dietary guidelines.
