There are so many people who have built successful companies from the ground up.
A lot of installers started because they saw an opportunity.
Maybe they were working for somebody else and thought, I could do this better.
Maybe they wanted more freedom.
Maybe they wanted to create something for their family.
And that word family is often the reason people start.
They want security.
They want independence.
They want to create something they can be proud of.
But what's interesting is that the family involvement often happens naturally.
At the beginning, everyone helps.
The partner answers the phone.
Someone does invoices in the evening.
Someone cleans up the paperwork.
Someone helps load the van.
The family become part of the business before anyone officially decides they are.
And that's where the journey starts.
When we talk about family businesses, I think one of the best places to start is with the story of how they actually begin.
Because most family businesses don't start with a big plan, a fancy team, or a team of people behind them.
They usually start with someone seeing an opportunity and deciding to take a chance.
That's exactly how FastFit Garage Door started.
The business was officially founded in 1985 by my parents, who saw an opportunity locally and decided to build something for themselves.
At the time, my dad had been helping a friend out in the Worcester area as extra work and through that he started developing his skills, gaining experience and seeing there was potentially a bigger opportunity there.
The original idea was simple, create something of their own and build a business they could be proud of.
My mum was definitely the more cautious one at the time, which is probably quite common in family businesses.
