How the principles behind construction scaffolding can apply to parenting.
Generally speaking, scaffolding is a temporary platform for elevated areas.
The purpose of scaffolding is to provide crews with support through a secure foundation as they work in dangerous, hard to reach places.
Scaffolding is designed to support the heavy weight of crews, tools, and even building materials.
This system with its accompanying guardrail provides an extra layer of protection against slips and even worse, falls.
As I reflected over the purposes of scaffolding, I came to see parents as a type of scaffolding as well.
Compared to the entirety of their lives, children are only under their parents' roof temporarily.
Yet even in that seemingly short timeframe, parents work diligently to create an environment where their children can feel safe and secure, which is no small feat.
Regardless of our age, the world can be a stressful, if not a frightening place at times.
So many demands are placed on our young people today.
Carrying such a heavy weight day after day can begin to take a toll.
However, with parental scaffolding and guardrails properly in place, an extra layer of protection ensures that children can happily go about their lives without fretting over the emotional dangers that surround them.
Parental scaffolding is neither a new concept nor exclusive to my family.
I've seen countless examples of wonderful parents providing their children with protection from the slips and falls of life from a foundation of love to a guardrail of guidelines.
