On this episode of The Elisha Show, Amb. Elisha speaks with Corey Baum, a social confidence coach, about overcoming social anxiety, developing communication skills, and building meaningful…
So I say a lot of times that confidence and things like that, you know, the social skills aspect of it, as I mentioned, is a little bit of the, the external skills sort of thing.
And the, the internal skills, right, we can go through this iterative process as we're working on our confidence and our social skills of learning a new skill, you know, and it starts often with figuring out where it is that we wanna go, right? Where, where do you wanna have...
Well, what are the things when we think about that, that go into it? Well, I, I need to probably learn it to some extent, like what is it that I wanna say? What is it that I wanna share? How do most people often communicate? And so it starts simply with learning some basic or fundamental kind of skills And then pretty quickly going out and trying the things, right? So if I said to you, Elijah, right, like, "Hey," uh, y- if, if you said to me, "Hey, I, I wanna be able to go over and introduce myself to anybody." Okay, great.
So we look at like, well, what are the some of the common things that how people would connect and interact with each other? The, the scenes, the places, what sort of things.
This isn't like you're gonna say the same thing to every person, but how can you be aware of your surroundings in order to open a conversation? Okay, so once you've got that, it's really going out and doing that.
Either one, you went out, you introduced yourself to somebody, you made a great connection, and it worked well.
I wanna continue this cycle looking for new experiences, new outliers," right? But oftentimes what happens is that when people start going out and trying this and experiencing it, they find that it's not so much about knowing what to say, it's, it's about navigating the internal experience or the thoughts and feelings and emotions.
Because oftentimes what happens is that somebody gets out there and they're like, they, you know, all of these thoughts come up about getting rejected, being afraid, and these different things, and we come back and we work on that.
Well, let's dig into kind of that experience and those thoughts to get us back out there and trying again.
And in another example, maybe it's, hey, um, you learned some things, you went out and tried it, and it didn't go as well as you'd hoped, right? People didn't receive it as well as you'd liked.
What do we need to change? What do we need to modify? And that's the part of having a coach, and that's a lot of what I do, is looking at that.
