My name is Dr. Ravi Kumar, and on today's episode, I'm sitting down with Dr. Sten Stray-Gunderson, one of the world's leading experts in blood flow restriction training and the physiology of hypoxia.

Now, when most of us hear of building muscle, our minds go to a few places, heavy barbells, hours in the gym, being so sore the next day you can barely walk down the stairs.

By placing specialized cuffs on the upper arms or upper legs, you can slightly slow low blood flow in and out of working muscles.

And that lets you train with very light loads, sometimes 20 to 30% of what you'd normally lift.

And you still get the kind of strength and muscle gains we used to think came only from heavy lifting.

Heavy training does work for gaining muscle and strength, and it's still one of the best tools we have.

But I really wanted to understand how blood flow restriction exercise works and how we can utilize it to make physiological fitness more attainable.

His father, Dr. Jim Stray Gunderson, helped pioneer the field of blood flow restriction exercise.

And Sten has carried that work forward as a researcher and now as an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina.

So by the end of this episode, you're going to understand what blood flow restriction actually is and what it's doing inside your body, why light loads can drive the same adaptations as heavy loads when using this technology.
