Lauren GuirguisGuestToday we're here with Doctors Lauren and Chris Gurgis, who just matched into dermatology together as a couple, and we are so excited to learn more about their journey.
Could you start by telling us each a little bit more about yourselves and your path to dermatology?

I, uh, completed dental school, I went to OMFS residency, uh, before ultimately leaving and pursuing a career in medicine in dermatology.

Along the way I took some time, worked as a general dentist, uh, kinda getting ready for medical school, and the rest is history.

I had eczema as a child, and we didn't have a dermatologist in my hometown at the time, so my mom and I would drive about 45 minutes away just to get care.

Um, and I think it just really changed the way I think about skin and the way it can affect your life.

I think that that early experience really kind of inspired me to continue chasing that dream of just kind of being able to help others, especially kids, um, with their skin one day.
Uh, Chris, I wanted to ask you, what made you wanna switch from dentistry to medicine, first off, and then why dermatology specifically?

When I got, uh, into dental school and eventually was exposed to OMFS, what I really loved about it was I felt like it was very...

You know, I really liked the medicine piece, but to get into OMFS you take the CBSE, which is like the USMLE Step 1, and I got exposed to all of that knowledge, and I really enjoyed.

I, like, that was probably, like, my favorite piece of dental school, was studying for the CBSE.

Then I went to oral surgery and I saw a lot of mucocutaneous disease and, uh, oral disease and I, I saw that and I just, I, I had a big passion for it.
