For years, across different roles and different managers, I kept getting the same note.

They didn't use the same words every time, but the feedback was close enough that I started to sense it was coming before it was ever said aloud.

It was stated as if the thing that was responsible for the stellar work I produced, the thing I was actually being paid for, was also the thing standing between me and being liked.

I second-guessed the intensity that had gotten me the results in the first place because someone in a position to shape my career had told me more than once that it was a problem.

It wasn't until later in my career that I realized I'd been handed something that only looked like feedback, but it wasn't really feedback.

So fast forward several decades, and what I clearly understand today is how that note I kept being given, it was never about my work.
