The Senate Environment and Communications References Committee’s Australia Post Retail Network inquiry was overwhelmed with submissions.
In an email to inform submitters that their submission won’t be published, it stated that due to a significant response to this inquiry from the Australian community and to maximise resources, whilst some submissions won’t be published, the committee will consider this evidence.
The committee cannot ignore the truth driving the closure of post offices.
Owners of licensed post offices gave damning evidence at the thirtieth of September public hearing, detailing the story of LPOs being abandoned by Australia Post and left with no support under the leadership of CEO Paul Graham.
Acting on a request from ACP supporter Gerard O'Neill regarding the closure of the Windang LPO in New South Wales on the twenty-ninth of June, Cunningham MP Alison Burns asked Australia Post, why? In his reply, Australia Post General Manager of Government, Industry and Regulatory Affairs, Brett Gale, put the onus back onto the licensee, claiming it was their decision to participate in Australia Post’s voluntary licence hand-back program.
He then proceeded to advise the MP of other nearby outlets providing postal products.
The question is: what role did Australia Post play in the licensee making that decision? Were they supportive of keeping the business open or of closing? Evidence given at the hearings seemed to indicate the latter.
