## What Happens After the Conversation?
Think about the last five people you had a real conversation with in your business. Maybe they were podcast guests. Maybe you met them on a discovery call, at a networking event, through a coffee chat, or somewhere else entirely.
Do you still talk to them?
I've been thinking about this a lot as I look at the guests coming through the Built to Scale podcast. We can spend 30 or 45 minutes having a genuinely interesting conversation with someone, learn about their business, hear their ideas and experiences, and walk away thinking, "I really liked that person." And then...nothing happens.
I don't think every conversation needs to turn into a sales opportunity. In fact, I very specifically do not want you inviting your dream clients onto your podcast just so you can trap them in a sales pitch afterward. A guest does not automatically equal a lead. Neither does a coffee chat, discovery call, or networking connection.
But that person might be a lead. They might be a collaborator. They might be a referral partner. They might even be more than one of those things.
In this episode of Chaos to Clarity, we're talking about what happens when we stop treating conversations as isolated events and start paying attention to the relationships they create. I'll walk you through a simple exercise you can use with the last five to ten people you've connected with so you can decide who you genuinely want to stay connected to and what a natural next step could look like.
Because sometimes growing your business has less to do with finding more people and more to do with paying attention to the people you've already met.
### In This Episode
- Why a podcast guest, discovery call, or networking connection does not automatically equal a lead.
- The three relationship categories I look for: lead, collaborator, and referral partner.
- Why the relationship created through a conversation can be valuable even when no immediate sale happens.
- How I'm rethinking guest relationships inside the Built to Scale podcast.
- Why good automation should help you be more human rather than send fake, impersonal follow-ups.
- How to review your last five to ten business conversations for opportunities you may have overlooked.
- Ways to reconnect naturally without immediately pitching someone.
- Why real conversations can make you more memorable than simply posting more content.
### This Week's Next Step
Make a list of the last five to ten people you've had meaningful business conversations with.
For each person, write down how you met, what stood out about the conversation, whether you genuinely want to stay connected, and whether you see the potential for them to become a lead, collaborator, referral partner, or some combination of those.
Then identify one natural next step.
That could be sending a message, asking about a collaboration, checking in on something they mentioned, inviting them to another conversation, or simply reconnecting.
You don't need to pitch them. You just need to stop letting potentially valuable relationships disappear because the original conversation ended.
