In this case, it happened to be around food, which is not unusual with small children and parents.
So I had a very wise pediatrician, and he suggested that there was really nothing wrong with my son, but that perhaps our relationship might benefit and the struggle might resolve if I were to do a special program at the Institute of Child Psychology in my hometown of Toronto.
He was behind a two-way mirror watching the way I interacted with my kid.
And I'm telling you that in that moment, I did not have a clue why they would call a program something like that.
What about intervening, micromanaging, obsessing? Those were my three words, okay? So I'm sure that you can see that, in fact, the program...
Clearly, they knew that I needed the help, but we both tremendously benefited from it.
And the truth is, during my entire 34 years as a parent, I have struggled with those three words, not just in parenting, watch, wait, wonder.
And my friends, those three words, they can be a secret sauce in parenting at any age and at any stage from your three-year-old to your 33-year-old.
