With AI proliferating at a rapid pace - it has professionals wondering: will AI take my job? Today I want to help quell the fear of AI job displacement by highlighting the leadership communication…
To teach you these skills, it's important to understand the three types of communication that organizations value.
Those types are transactional communication, directional communication, and inspirational communication.
Transactional communication is when someone in your company needs information, and you provide that information to that person.
So, for example, maybe the head of marketing says, "Hey, could you give me a summary of the most recent marketing campaign that we ran?" And you put together a summary and share it with them.
They ask you for a piece of information, and you give it to them transactionally.
This is very important in an organization because leaders need you to deliver them that information so that they can make decisions.
Now, directional communication is when you proactively come to your stakeholders with a direction.
It could also look like you going to your boss or going to the head of marketing in an organization and saying, "Hey, I have some ideas for how we can reduce the cost of our marketing campaigns.
I'd love to share those with you." Directional communication is super valuable for organizations because the suggestions that you offer help create value and positive outcomes for your company.
This is where you get your stakeholder so invested and so excited about your suggestion that they buy into it, they support you, and they empower you to execute it.
So, an example of inspirational communication would be going to that same head of marketing and saying, "Hey, I identified a way to reduce our campaign costs.
If we implement this, we can increase the reach of our campaigns without spending extra money, which means we're going to get more traffic, we're going to get better results, and we're going to see an increase in customers." So now, I've gone one step beyond just sharing a direction with my stakeholder, and I've inspired them.
This is very valuable within an organization because you need to be able to get people inspired, excited, and bought in if you want to actually implement the changes that you are suggesting.
Now, the reason that I'm sharing these three categories of communication skills is because all three of these types of communication are super valuable for an organization, but AI is not good at every single one of them.
