Before Genesis became doctrine, another version of the story was buried in the Egyptian desert. In this one, the god who made the world is a mistake - and the serpent in the garden came to wake us up…
Before the world, before the gods of the world, the texts describe something they can barely name.
The Apocryphon of John calls it the Monad, the invisible spirit, the father of everything.
It has no edge and no form.
It needs nothing.
Nothing stands above it.
It sees its own image in the living water of light around it.
That image becomes its first thought.
From her, the light keeps unfolding.
Together, they make the pleroma, the fullness.
Near its outer edge stands Sophia.
Wisdom.
Sophia does something no other Aeon has done.
She decides to create on her own, without the consent of the spirit, without her partner.
The texts call it desire, a thought she could not hold back.
The power in her pushes outward, past the edge of the fullness.
What comes out is incomplete.
It looks nothing like her.
Sophia sees it and is afraid.
She casts it out and hides it inside a luminous cloud so none of the others will see what she has made.
A serpent with the face of a lion.
Its eyes flash like lightning.
