Most farming families have a good year, watch the money come in — and then quietly wonder, sometime in March, where it all went. Not because anyone was reckless. Not because anyone wasn't working…
No entities detected.
Not because they're lazy, not because they don't care, but because the money came in, the year got busy, and by the time anyone thought to ask where it all went, it had already gone somewhere.
One of the clearest signals I've found to identify a family that's actually going places is whether the family's having a deliberate conversation about what they do with their profit.
Not just what they made, but what they do with it, intentionally, together, and as a family.
When I sit down with a family for the first time and that conversation is already happening, I know I'm dealing with a high-performing family.
And when it's not, when profit just gets absorbed back into the business by default, year after year, with no real discussion, that tells me something too.
The year ends, the accountant does the numbers, the tax gets sorted, and whatever's left goes straight back into the business or disappears into whatever was urgent at the time.
It just kinda happened, and then it happened again the next year, and the year after that, and so on.
The families I describe as genuinely high-performing, the ones that build wealth and keep the family together across the generations, they don't leave this to default.
They have structured conversations about it, and they have it regularly, not just when something goes wrong or when the numbers are unusually good.
That shift from reactive to deliberate, from default to decision, sounds simple, but it changes everything about how a family operates.
