And the great thing about Tape Notes is that we get to unravel some of the, the secrets, uh, some of the things behind, um, the magic that is Disclosure, and the first track we were going to look at in detail is "Duhar Mali Mali" featuring Fatoumata Diawara, which is out there now.

And you say, Guy, that this was one of the first tracks that, that you had, that it was on the other version of the album 18 months ago.

Yeah, that's right.

I think sort of start of 2018 I think we wrote this.

Yeah, it's the second time we've used Fatoumata's voice on one of our tunes, so, um, yeah.

It's a slightly different way of operating for us.

You know, usually, um, well, 99% of the time to be honest, we always start from scratch with an idea, unless we're, you know, sampling something or making, like, an edit of something.

But, you know, if we're doing a truly from ground up song, we'll always make sure we have the singer in the room with us together.

We'd never do it remotely or something like that.

Just it's never been the way for us.

We're musicians at heart.

You know, I'm a drummer.

Howard's a bass player, a keyboard player.

It's like we jam a little bit, you know, in the room.

Mm.

We have to bounce ideas, and that's important to us.

But with this song, this vocal was sent to us by Fatoumata as an unreleased demo of hers, so we already had that to play with.

And I think, you know, the other reason we're comfortable with that, especially with someone like her, is that it's not in English, so, you know, we don't have much to contribute lyrically, and her melodies are more than amazing, so that's kind of taken care of.

You know, if the lyrics were in English, we might be a little bit more concerned that the meaning wouldn't quite be where we want it to go.

But yeah, it's funny.

When, when you're not working in English, there's a new freedom that opens up to you, you know? You can just kind of dispose of the meaning for a second, just make the music that you think fits the vocal vibe-wise, and then, you know, you come to learn what it's about after, and hopefully what you made matches the meaning of the song.
